What can you do with an economics major? Almost anything! Join the economics department for a full day of career panels, office hours with alumni, and other networking opportunities. You’ll hear from guests with diverse backgrounds and have a chance to ask questions and speak with our guests. What do they have in common – an economics major! This program will be of interest to all students who are considering work in the fields of our guests.

Please join the department of economics as we welcome back alumni and other guests with economics degrees to share their career stories with you and provide tips and advice about your internship and job research. Meet these guests at panels and office hours. But you must sign up to reserve your spot. All programs, except the evening reception, are casual dress.

Stephen Ander (Panel 2)
Stephen Ander currently serves as a Partner at Gallup. Before Gallup, Stephen was an Associate at PwC and then a Special Advisor for the U.S. Secret Service. Stephen graduated in 2005 with a BA in Economics and Government and then went on to receive his Master of Public Policy (MPP) from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government in 2009.

Heather Bates (Panel 2)
Heather Bates currently is a Managing Director with Berkeley Research Group (BRG) in Washington, D.C. She provides consultation and analytical services to companies in the highly regulated life sciences industry. Heather works with many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers, especially around issues of drug pricing, marketing and contracting. She develops economic damages models that her clients use to assess potential exposure and ultimately resolve multi-million and multi-billion dollar legal disputes. Heather graduated with a BA in Economics in 2001. BRG is a leading global strategic advisory and expert consulting firm that provides independent advice, data analytics, expert testimony, and regulatory and dispute consulting to Fortune 500 corporations, financial institutions, major law firms, and regulatory bodies around the world. Each summer the D.C. office hires 10+ university graduates and actively recruits Economics majors from the University of Virginia.

John Brandberg (Panel 2)
John Brandberg has been a Finance Executive with Procter and Gamble (P&G) for over 20 years. John interviewed with P&G on Grounds and started his career in Cincinnati in 1993. He has focused his career in operations, providing financial leadership for new manufacturing operations in the U.S. John has global experience with P&G, leading projects in Japan, Germany, the U.S. and Costa Rica. He currently leads P&G’s Manufacturing Operations Financial Analysis Organization for North America and Latin America, based in Greensboro, NC. He lives there with his wife (Cheryl, CLAS ’93 and Curry ’94) and 3 children (Jake, Emma and Davis). Jake is a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill, a school almost as good as U.Va. Emma will attend Clemson in the fall, a school with a football team. John graduated with a BA in Economics in 1993.

Jeff Burnett (Panel 4)
Jeff Burnett currently serves as the Director of Research at Quantitative Investment Management (QIM) in Charlottesville. Prior to this, Jeff was the Head of Algorithmic Trading at QIM and worked as a Trader at Watermark Group. Jeff graduated with a BS in Economics and Statistics from Vanderbilt University. He then went on to receive an MS in Statistics and finished ABD in Mathematics from NC State.

Jeanna Composti Sondag (Panel 3)
Jeanna Composti Sondag currently works as the V.P., Assistant General Counsel for JPMorgan Chase. Previously, she worked as the Deputy Director of Real Estate Finance for the New York State Department of Financial Services and as an Associate at Willkie, Farr, and Gallagher, LLP. Jeanna graduated with a BA in Economics in 2003. While at U.Va. Jeanna participated in Cross Country and Track and Field. She continued her education and received her J.D. from Cornell University in 2008.

Benji Cook (Panels 1 and 3)
Benji Cook currently works as an Account Business Owner in Sales Forecasting for Under Armour. After college, Benji worked as a Marketing Specialist for DuPont-Protection Technologies (Chemicals) and as a Global Demand Planner and Supply Chain Analyst for Starbucks. Benji graduated in 2012 with a BA in Economics and Environmental Sciences. While at U.Va., he was a volunteer at Madison House and a member of Sigma Chi.

Andrew Dailey (Panels 1 and 4)
Andrew Dailey is a Senior Consultant in the Health Solutions practice of FTI Consulting and is based in Washington, DC. Andrew assists in a variety of pharmaceutical and insurance payer based litigation-driven matters that require extensive data analytics support. Andrew has also taken an active role in charitable activities and pro bono initiatives while at FTI. He graduated from U.Va in 2013 with a BA in Economics and a concentration in International Economics, with a minor in History. During his time at U.Va, he studied Global Economics for a semester in Copenhagen, Denmark, was involved in Alternative Spring Break and Greek Life, and was a member of the Club Tennis team.

Nicholas Feucht (Panel 2)
Nick Feucht loves serving the people of Richmond in the Office of the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Economic and Community Development. Nick is actively focused on adapting, implementing and executing the policies, projects and strategies of the portfolio of agencies he toils among. Nick interfaces with a variety of public, private and non-profit entities helping to inform and direct their energies towards mutually beneficial and attainable outcomes. To put it more succinctly he has a long leash and likes to roam around City Hall.
In his seven years in Richmond he has spearheaded and managed a variety of projects involving multiple internal and external partners including the establishment of the Richmond’s first Arts and Cultural District which continues to catalyze reinvestment in the City’s core, helped with the launch of the nation’s first Office of Community Wealth Building which takes a holistic approach to the mitigation of entrenched poverty, and a multi-jurisdictional collaboration to redesign a 5 mile, first generation suburban commercial corridor into community orientated around sustainability, equity and diversity.
Nick is eager to see the city broaden and rebalance its economic and neighborhood assets in a manner that is resilient, equitable and environmentally sustainable. To that end Nick is an active advocate for the increased expansion of broadband and other infrastructure critical to growth of the employment base and digital economy, dispersed investments in Richmond neighborhoods and public amenities over traditional large scale projects, and bending all city policies and actions to promote equality, integration and inclusion for the people of Richmond. Nick received his Master of Public Policy from the Frank S. Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and his BA in Economics from the University of Virginia. He and his partner, Kate, live in Providence Park on Richmond’s north side in a 100 year old house they are restoring (too) slowly.

Sloan Harris (Panel 3)
Sloan Harris is a Founding Partner and co-head of the Publications Department of ICM Partners, a talent and literary agency representing clients in the fields of motion pictures, television, publishing, music, theater, corporate branding and digital media. ICM Partners, a privately held corporation, is one of the preeminent agencies in the United States and Europe, with its principal offices in Los Angeles and New York. Sloan oversees a department that represents a prestigious roster of authors who boast more than 100 titles on the New York Times Best Seller lists every year. Sloan personally guides the careers of bestselling authors such as the Estate of Dr. Seuss, Hampton Sides, Jane Mayer, Scott Anderson, Anthony Lane, Michael Paterniti, Nelson DeMille, Lauren Weisberger, Doug Stanton, A.J. Jacobs, James Andrew Miller, Jason Matthews, George Pelecanos, the Estate of Michael Crichton, and the Estate of Vince Flynn. After graduating with a BA in Economics in 1989, Sloan began his career at ICM in the agency’s mailroom.

Rachel Parkin (Panel 2)
Rachel Parkin currently serves as the Senior V.P. for Strategy and Sales at CafeMedia (Digital Industry). She oversees programmatic media sales and audience targeting efforts. Over her career, Rachel has used analytics to help drive business decisions across a number of industries ranging from e-commerce to consumer products to media. Previously, Rachel worked as the Senior V.P. for Global Brand Strategy at BAV Consulting, where she led a client team in mapping out strategies to build brand equity. Her work covered the full spectrum of brand opportunities, including positioning, tracking, architecture, valuation, and consumer segmentation. Rachel worked with CRA International right after graduation from U.Va., where she evaluated the competitive effects of proposed mergers. Rachel graduated in 1998 with a B.A. in Economics and continued her education and received a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University.

Spencer Phillips (Panel 3)
Spencer Phillips is the founder of Key Log Economics, LLC, a consultancy that helps NGOs and other clients bring information about the economic value of nature to bear on land use, ecosystem management and community development decisions. Mr. Phillips is also a lecturer in the Department of Economics and in the Batten School. Prior to founding Key Log Economics, Mr. Phillips was vice president for Ecology and Economics Research at The Wilderness Society, executive director of NorthWoods Stewardship Center, and staff economist at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Spencer graduated with a BA in Economics in 1985 and was a member of Theta Chi, the University Union, and the Pep Band. He continued his education and received an MS and PhD in Agricultural and Applied Economics form Virginia Tech.

Alaina Rhee (Panels 1 and 4)
Alaina Rhee currently works as a Research Analyst at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Alaina previously worked in the Economics Systems team with the IMF. She graduated in 2014 with a BA in Economics with a concentration in International Economics, and a double major in International Relations. While at U.Va., Alaina was a program director at Madison House, a member of Alpha Chi Omega and the International Relations Organization, and she was an undergraduate assistant for the Politics department.

Aly Searles (Panels 1 and 4)
Aly Searles is a Senior Consultant with PwC. She started with PwC’s Advisory practice in 2012 after interviewing on Grounds. Aly began her career with a focus on delivering data analytics, change management, and organizational design solutions to public sector clients. During that time, she played a key role in the change management and business process re-engineering efforts for the Military Health System’s largest governance reorganization since 1948. More recently, Aly moved into PwC’s National Advisory Practice to design, develop, and launch PwC’s Talent Exchange, a new web-based platform, inspired by the growth of the global ‘gig’ economy. The marketplace will connect freelance talent directly with PwC. Aly completed her BA in Economics in 2012 with a double major in Cognitive Science and a minor in Global Culture and Commerce. While at U.Va, Aly studied abroad in Valencia, Spain and was an active member of the University Singers, Chamber Singers, and Sigma Kappa.

Sarah Spencer (Panels 1 and 3)
Sarah Spencer currently works at University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO) as an Investment Analyst. Sarah interned with UVIMCO the summer before she graduated. She also nterned with A2 Access in New York City. She graduated in 2016 with a BA in Economics.

Christine Taylor (Panel 1)
Christine Taylor is a Campus Recruiter for Clark Construction Group, LLC and manages their nationwide college recruiting efforts. Before moving into this role, Christine worked as a Corporate Philanthropy Coordinator at Clark and as an analyst with the firm in their Strategic and Business Planning group. Christine graduated in 2012 with a BA in Economics.

Brad Uhl (Panels 1 and 4)
Brad Uhl is the Co-Founder for the ID Company and the Co-Owner of Grit Coffee. Brad previously worked as a production director at Journey Group and as the Chief Operating Officer at MYLAMP (social planning). He graduated with a BA in Economics in 2007 and continued his education and received his MBA from Darden.
